Jessica Abel

Drawing Words/Writing Pictures & Life Sucks

Jessica Abel joins me on the TCJ Talkies podcast this week. Jessica is perhaps best known for two Fantagraphics series, Artbabe and La Perdida, the latter of which was collected into graphic-novel form by Pantheon in 2006.

Most of this interview is spent discussing her comics-making textbook Drawing Words & Writing Pictures, which she co-wrote with her husband, the cartoonist Matt Madden. We also talk about her experiences in the classroom, teaching comics at the School of Visual Arts, and a little bit about her work as a co-editor of the annual Best American Comics series.

Also joining me this week is Jessica’s Life Sucks co-writer, Gabe Soria, who stops by for a brief chat about the experience of creating that book.

Although I think Warren Pleece’s art on Life Sucks is brilliant I’ve often wondered how good it’d be had Ms. Abel (Mrs. Madden?!?) drawn it. I think her lovely, thick, brushy style would have suited the tone of the book very well, myself. Great interview, anyhow–the stuff about Drawing Words… was really interesting–I must get round to buying that book! The pages from it which are on-line point to an indispensable handbook for serious students of comics–I reckon that even “pros” with 10 years in print behind them could find something within that they didn’t know, or a new approach to familiar problems…okay I’ll shut up, I’m buying it!
