The damndest things can happen in an instant. While Jean Giraud’s illness may not have taken him instantly, for those of us unaware of it, his passing hits with an all too real suddenness if not complete surprise.
For me, Jean opened the door to drafting in perspective, with the liberty that a fully possessed knowledge grants and all the awe, joy, and original fecundity that that unfetters. The cosmic and the personal so intersected is profoundly effective for it’s human depth. Jean’s more ‘personal’ works began where others might have their zenith, beginning from an unbounded context rather telling of any travail to reach such. For me, Jean put perspective in perspective, and bespoke of an even grander horizon of a sort behind it. One’s own angst or ego is a speck in that scheme. The beauty of the sublime is availed and infuses.
For me, Jean opened the door to openended graphic poetry, the macro to the micro of proper fictive story arc. Zen arture. He appeared to have strong sense of fractal scale in writing as well as in art. Only recently did I make any connection between Hermes, the god of poetry among other things, with ‘Hermetic’ or ‘Hermatique’. Ongoing stream of consciousness writing is really a high art, one of the highest in my estimate, but to do so within the ordered boundaries of discrete pages of art is the epitome of such a literary challenge -and to do it successfully virtually the equivalent of proving Fermat’s Last Theorem, in my humble opinion.
Jean Giraud virtually embodied unfetteredness for me. In his head and heart, there seemed a first premise that everything is innately infinite, including our ignorance, and that that our reach shall always exceed our grasp is infinity’s greatest boon.
His work was ‘personal’ and ‘universal’ at the same time, redefining both even as it combined them. Behind everything lies the horizon, and only God knows where the ends meet. Perhaps they never do, and it as all one continuous moebius line.
An immensely loveable man, I loved him dearly. It’s almost laughable to say that in mere words -it should be drawn instead.
