Dylan - Mike and Megan are on their way over to our house, where we've set up a triage center with coffee, wine, and a B movie or two. I just want to sleep. My landlady saw both planes hit; she had just dropped her kid off at kindergarten in lower Manhattan and saw a postcard-perfect view of the whole thing. For the record, there's no supermarket hysteria in my corner of Brooklyn. I think we'd all do well to remain calm and not pour more fear into this situation. IP: Logged |

Thank you Leela - please give all my love to Megan and Mike and Tom and yourself and anyone else you see! The atmosphere there must be ghastly - from the shock and fear to the kneejerk catastrophising and warmongering. I'm thinking of you all and wishing you all the peace and kindness and gentleness I can. Here's to life. XXX IP: Logged |

Leela, Dino, alla y'all, I'm so glad you're all OK. This is fucking horrific. Not only Danny but his S.O. are perfectly OK, as stated earlier. I have a friend in Washington whose brother worked in exactly that part of the Pentagon till 1 year ago; he would have been killed. A friend of his still does, or did--they don't know whether he's alive or dead. This is just too big. Fuck. IP: Logged |

For those who know cartoonist Joe Meyer, he's okay. Everyone else: Please keep the updates coming. Anyone heard anything about Langridge yet? Who else lives/works in Manhattan that we haven't heard about yet? --Ricko IP: Logged |

I'm here. Everyone at Marvel and DC seems to be okay, as well as the Brooklyn cartoon community. ironically, the crossover between the comics world and the financial world wasn't too great. Thanks for all good thoughts, everyone. I'm many blocks from ground zero, where it is basically a war zone at this point. Southern Manhattan is in ruins. I am near Bedpan Alley (a row of hospitals) over on 1st Avenue, and the sound of the sirens today has been sickening. I walked over to try to give blood, but they were full up, thank God. Not so much chaos where we are as a surreal calmness. Thousands and thousands of innocent people have been killed, and one of the world's greatest landmarks has been destroyed. Just the idea that we live in the same world as the sick fucks who planned this is depressing. IP: Logged |

I'm sorry that I won't get to see any of you as planned, but relieved to hear you're all okay. The irony for me is that just yesterday, people were calling me to see how I was after Sunday's earthquake. IP: Logged |

This kind of horror goes beyond my ability to put words together, I fear, so I just want to wish strength -- and good news -- to Jeff, Jenny, John and all the others who are waiting for word on loved ones, and all of us waiting to hear about admired comic book folks. It *is* great, however to hear that Heidi, Dean, and many others are alive and well. Please keep the confirmations coming. I know they live in Brooklyn -- but can someone please confirm Jessica and Matt, anyway, please? I've been trying all day to reach my friend Tracy, and her husband (another college contemporary of mine) Paul, who live in NY. She majored in Economics and has worked in the field since graduating. I *think* she works in a bank, but I have no idea where exactly in the city that bank would be located. I only had her home number with me; no e-dresses or her work number. The circuits were busy all day long. The email I sent her about ten minutes ago bounced back to me: "The recipient name is not recognized." Don't know if she simply doesn't work there anymore, or if NO ONE works there anymore. I'm fucking scared. Her fella probably had no reason to be in that part of town, even if SHE might have. So he's probably okay. Then there's a very, very slight chance that my ex-husband moved to NY at some point, like he sometimes talked about doing. But why he would be anywhere near the WTC would be a mystery to me. So, this is the kind of worry that so, so many people are going thru -- but most of those who are probably has it much worse than me... I really feel for them. Peace, if you can manage it, IP: Logged |

Manhattan has never been so quiet, although I'm sure that won't last long. There are almost no vehicles on the streets except for emergency and relief vehicles. Pedestrians are not being allowed below Houston, and the news was saying that all businesses below 14th St. will be closed tomorrow. The huge black funnel of smoke dominated the skyline until the night. IP: Logged |

So glad to hear of the folks who are safe and well. And we're saying prayers here for the injured. I feel like running back to church all of a sudden. I found out a friend who used to live in Brighton and went back to New York now works (worked) in the World Trade Centre. He also put out and anti-TV book called White Dot. I hope to God he is ok, he's a good guy with a wee baby daughter. No word from him yet. IP: Logged |

quote: Adam and Leslie are alive and well; spoke with them earlier. I just heard on the news that some assholes were caught on the Jersey side of the George Washington Bridge with a truckload of explosives. One can only imagine how much worse we'd all feel if, after what we've been through today, something ELSE got blown up. If this story is true and there are indeed these two dogfuckers in custody, I very much hope the Feds manage to sweat Osama Bin Laden's mailing address out of them. IP: Logged |

Are the phone lines going into New York City down or are the circuits just overloaded? My oldest friend in the world lives in SoHo and works across the street from the World Trade Center and I haven't been able to reach him all day. He's a fool, but I've known him since the second grade and I love him like . . . I have no taste for tragedy--it doesn't turn me on at all. IP: Logged |

Keep trying with the phone calls, the circuits come and go. I can't think of anything to say, but I'm okay. I was working at St. Vincent's and from the 14th floor we all had a good view of the worst thing I hope I ever see. But we haven't seen any of the worst of it close up yet-- mostly minor injuries came into St. V's so far. They rushed about 200 trauma cases to Bellevue, mostly beyond saving. We'll see what tomorrow brings. Peace, love. IP: Logged |

Thanks to the support from everyone. They briefly opened trains into the city so I was able to go in and get my fella, and have since learned most everyone else I know is ok. The situation changes so rapidly. As I rode the A train into midtown, I was surprised that we actually rode THROUGH the World Trade Center station. Right under the building, it wasn't damaged, just eerily empty for a mid-afternoon. By the time we got on the train to go back though, they had decided to re-route it. I am so glad I'm medicated right now. IP: Logged |

Scott, Yes -- we very much still are. It has been pointed out on this thread that Jessica and Matt live in Brooklyn, so most likely they are safe. But there has been no confirmation one way or another as to their situation. Let's hope we get *good* word soon. Matthew IP: Logged |

Rick Bradford mentioned that people were doing a roll call here and that somebody had mentioned my name, as I was supposed to be coming to SPX. So just to tell you I?m fine, and still in London (which won?t change for the foreseeable future). I don?t know if Bob Fingerman has checked in here, but we?ve been in touch and he and Michele are fine too (Michele was working half a mile away at the time). The world is a very strange place all of a sudden... Roger Langridge IP: Logged |

Jenny, the night before the horrors I dreamt I was in New York hanging out with you, and we were going to visit Kaz. It was a really good dream, and I was thinking how much I liked New York and the people. I'm SO glad you're ok girly. Lots of love Lorna x IP: Logged |

quote: Anne, so glad you're okay....if i recall correctly, you used to have a view of both the WTC and the ESB...now only one. Also glad to hear about Bob and Michelle Fingerman. Michelle is the only person I know well who actually works in the Wall Street area, and she has been much in my thoughts. I know I am posting from emotion and shock right now, so forgive me if I get too sappy. This is the third time I have been throgh a civic disaster of this kind. I lived in Los Angeles during the riot of '92 (I think) and the quake of '94. Those were both very horrific and saddening experiences. This is probably the worst, because it was all deliberatly and diabolically planned. But I have to say, New Yorkers are the toughest people on earth. Despite what I wrote above about being depressed, the generosity and bravery of the average New Yorker that I have seen with my own eyes and on TV has really helped to restore my faith in at least some of humanity. The courage and selflessness of those firefighters who gave their lives -- by the hundreds -- to save other people is so inspiring. I think we should all take some comfort in the fact that as crazy and evil as this world can be, there is still such a thing as true heroism. IP: Logged |

I may have missed such a posting, but Matt Madden posted to a comics list that everyone he knew is okay, but most of us get it in digest form and only just received it. Brian Biggs wrote into the same list to report that Journal contributor and SPX mainstay Bart Beaty and his wife, who were visiting New York and staying in lower Manhattan, are fine after a nightmarish day. I just posted a list of everyone who's been confirmed to be alive in this thread. The full names of 'Cheese0012', 'Adam and Leslie' and 'jenny' would improve it. David Weman (edited cause i'm a idiot) [This message has been edited by CDW (edited September 12, 2001).] IP: Logged |

Matt and Jessica are fine (see above). James asked about Chris Duffy at Nickelodeon. I dropped him a line but haven't heard back yet. When James brought up Chris, I immediately thought of Calvin Reid at Publisher's Weekly (a true friend of comics as many New York cartoonists can attest) and sent him an email as well. I'm happy to report that Calvin is fine, he just responded. [This message has been edited by Scott McCloud (edited September 12, 2001).] IP: Logged |
